Towards an Analytical Capacity in Costing of Abatement Options for Forestry and Agricultural Carbon Sinks
Funding
European Commission, Directorate-General Environment, Contract no. B4-3040/2001/330714/MAR/E1
Duration
December 2001 – August 2002
Organisation
The study was carried out as a joint effort of the following research teams:
- EuroCARE
- University Hohenheim, Institut f. landwirtschaftliche Betriebslehre , Stuttgart-Hohenheim, Germany
- Prof. B. Solberg , Norwegian University of Life Sciences, AAS, Norway
Overall coordination was by Prof Dr. W. Henrichsmeyer
Objectives
- review existing economic sector models in agriculture and forestry with respect to their suitability for the quantification and modelling of carbon sinks, and the derivation of marginal cost curves for the abatement of greenhouse gas emissions via carbon sinks enhancement
- propose options of modelling approaches to the European Commission which are particularly suitable for achieving the objective, and to recommend further model developments to meet the demands for policy advice.
The overall objective of this study is a proposal to the EU on the development of analytical and model-based instruments for the analysis of abatement costs in agriculture and forestry taking account of carbon sinks and non-CO2 greenhouse gases. In more detail the study pursues the following objectives:
Methodology
The study is based on a literature review and a detailed assessment of existing model approaches which are already in use or can possibly be used for policy advice in the European Union.
